Howard Keel strongly dismissed The Karl Denver Trio’s Mexicali Rose. The American actor and singer described the song which Bing Crosby had made famous before the Second World War as the worst exhibition of country and western he had ever heard. However the Glaswegian defended his version as ‘just moving with the times’.

Mexicali Rose got to number 8 in November and it spent 11 weeks in the charts.
