Mexicali Rose by the Karl Denver Trio was strongly dismissed by Howard Keel.

The American actor and singer described the song made famous by Bing Crosby before the Second World War as, ‘the worst exhibition of country and western he had ever heard’, but the yodelling Glaswegian later defended his version as: ” I’am only moving with the times”.

Mexicali Rose reached number eight in the charts in November 1961.
